Remelluri Rioja Lindes Labastida 2021

$4999

The vineyards of Remelluri have produced wine since the medieval period, but it was only in 1967 that the Rodríguez family bought the abandoned estate and set out to make genre-defining Rioja — releasing the appellation's first single-vineyard wine in 1971. The Lindes cuvées are the next chapter in that project: single-village wines, inspired by Burgundian labeling, made to honor the terroirs Rioja has only recently allowed producers to name on the label. This one comes from Labastida, Remelluri's home village in Rioja Alavesa — the high, rocky, cool side of the river that produces leaner, more chiseled Rioja than the sunny plains below. Classic Alavesa lift, classic Remelluri precision.

"The 2021 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida combines 89% Tempranillo, 5% Garnacha and 6% Graciano, sourced from a patchwork of soils and altitudes in Labastida, Rioja Alavesa. Complex and layered, it opens with red and black fruit, gentle herbal notes and a touch of jam. A slightly floral tone reflects the site's character. In the mouth, reactive tannins lend drive and structure, while the fine, chalky texture reigns in the juicy, expansive palate. The year's clarity has enhanced the overall definition." —Joaquín Hidalgo

"The 2021 Viñedos de Labastida is one of the largest cuvées, one of the wines produced from the beginning of the project together with the one from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, completely different volumes than the other wines. It comes from many different vineyards, from 440 to 710 meters above sea level in a diversity of soils and orientations and, as such, has a majority of Tempranillo, with some Garnacha, Graciano and most probably small percentages of other varieties. All the wines are produced in the same way to showcases the differences between villages: the grapes are hand harvested into small cases, go through a sorting table and ferment with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. The wines age in barrels of different sizes for 12 months. This has a very balsamic and herbal nose, with 14.1% alcohol and is serious and austere, with great freshness despite numbers that are nothing special in terms of pH and total acidity. There are 100,000 bottles. It was bottled in May 2023." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Remelluri

The history of Remelluri stretches back into the 14th century when monks from the Toloño monastery founded a sanctuary and farm at the site. The winery we know today was established in 1967 when Jaime Rodríguez Salis purchased the vineyards at the heart of the former property. Since then Remelluri has been devoted to recovering the old lands of this historic site and restoring the original vineyards.

Remelluri’s vineyards are located along the slopes of the Sierra de Toloño mountains in the valleys of Valderemelluri, La Granja, and Villaescusa in Rioja Alavesa. The vineyards here are at the highest elevation in the region, south-facing and protected from the prevailing winds and frost. It is the unique microclimate coupled with the high level of calcareous soil that gives the wines their personality, pedigree, and propensity for aging.

Remelluri holds a privileged position in Rioja as the winery that set the path for bringing Rioja out of its mid century doldrum. Maintaining a foot in the past while pushing the boundaries of modernization, the Rodriguez family eschewed chemicals for ancient farming methods including a recent adoption of biodynamics.

In 2010, Jaime’s son and daughter, Telmo and Amaia Rodríguez, took the reins of the estate and set about making a series of changes to showcase the potential and diversity of Remellur’s different terroirs, and ultimately reclaim Rioja’s viticultural history. The first major change was to cut down the production of Remelluri wines by one third, restricting it to wines produced from the estate’s own grapes. The two wines made from grapes grown in the surrounding villages are now sold under the label ‘Las Lindes de Remelluri’, and are identified each by their village of origin: Labastida and San Vicente de la Sonsierra.

As a nod to Rioja’s historic viticultural traditions, they have begun moving the Garnacha from trellis to bush-grown vines and will be working increasingly with mixed field plantings. Although Remelluri has always eschewed chemical treatments in the vineyard, 2010 marked the year of the estate’s full organic certification. Work in the winery plays a secondary role in Telmo’s philosophy, but great care is taken to make sure that each bottle reflects the terruño of the region: wines are fermented with native yeasts, each plot is vinified separately, new oak is used very scarcely and the wines are very lightly filtered and fined.
