San Fereolo Dogliani Valdiba 2021

$2999

Dolcetto from the heart of Dogliani, just south of Barolo, made by a producer who treats the grape with real seriousness. San Fereolo is Nicoletta Bocca's biodynamic (Demeter-certified) estate, and Valdiba is her everyday Dogliani, sourced from younger vines and vinified entirely in steel with about a 10-day maceration to keep the fruit fresh and pure. Bottled after roughly a year, it is the juicy, immediately drinkable side of her cellar while still carrying real Langhe structure.

More about San Fereolo

Assembled from ancient vineyards, this hilltop estate is the life’s work of Nicoletta Bocca. In 1992 after a career in the Milan fashion world, Nicolletta began purchasing these treasured sites from farmers who had grown too old to work them. The oldest of these sites was planted in 1936 and the “young vines” in 1978. Dolcetto is the bulk of what she grows but there are ancient vines of Nebbiolo and Barbera as well. She converted them all to biodynamic practices, believing that this would unleash their potential. The last quarter century has proven her right!

In order to harness this potential, work in the cellar is as minimal as it gets. Fruit is de-stemmed, crushed, and then fermented in large neutral Slavonian oak vats. There is no temperature control, the old wood imparts very little in the way of oaky aroma or flavor, and no additives or commercial yeasts are added.

Fereolo has made its name on Dolcetto with very long eleveage. In Nicoletta’s cavernous cellars she ages the wines well beyond any Barolo and Barbaresco producer.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Rosenthal Wine Merchant

Nicoletta Bocca is known as a maverick for her ultra-long aged Langhe cuvées, among the finest in the entire region. “Valdibà” is her youthful expression of the Dogliani DOCG, made all in steel cuve, which shows in the fresh brightness of the wine. Nicoletta considers this to be classical Dolcetto, striking all of the notes one would expect from the variety, with a confident tannic backbone. From southeast and northwest-facing vines in the Barracone and San Fereolo vineyards in the Valdibà subsection of Dogliani. 13,000 bottles produced.
