Sandlands Contra Costa County Mourvedre Rose 2025

$3499

Most California rosé is an afterthought; Tegan Passalacqua treats it as a serious wine. This one is Mourvèdre from vines planted in the 1920s in Contra Costa County, own-rooted and dry-farmed in the deep sand that let these old plantings survive a century of phylloxera, neglect and suburban sprawl. Passalacqua spent years as director of winemaking at Turley while building Sandlands entirely around forgotten head-trained vineyards like this one, and his pink wines carry the same conviction as his reds: structure and tension rather than the light, fleeting prettiness the category usually settles for. Serve it cold but not ice-cold — it has enough grip to sit at the table through a whole meal.

"The 2025 Mourvèdre Rosé is a different animal from last year‘s edition. Whereas the 2024 was lighter and more classically Provençal in style, the 2025 is richer, darker in both color and flavor, denser and almost more in line with the Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo style that the Kirschenbloom seeks to channel. Red licorice, fresh strawberry, sweet cream, blood orange zest and lavender all explode from the glass. The 2025 is powerfully aromatic, deeply flavorful and so smooth in its contours. It’s utterly drinkable and incredibly fresh. Floral complexity builds and builds with time in the glass." —Billy Norris

More about Sandlands

Despite inspiring a number of other wine projects around the State of California, it’s still the case that nobody else makes wines quite like Tegan Passalacqua at Sandlands.

Partly, it's simple breed and experience. Tegan has made wine around the world, including at the famed Alain Graillot in the Northern Rhone, and most notably he spent twenty years working his way up to wine-maker/vineyard manager at Turley.

The Graillot connection is important, because it’s likely there that he learned the importance of granite: a soil that is now a Sandlands specialty. But the other lessons he’s absorbed have been closer to home: the importance of heritage California grape varieties, the importance of dry farming, the importance of making wines of elegance and balance.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled sardines, salade niçoise, merguez sausages, paella, or a platter of jamón and marcona almonds.

Tasting Profile

Red berry and citrus-pith aromas with a dusty, herbal edge. Dry and savory rather than fruity, medium bodied, with firm acidity and a faintly saline finish.
