Long before anyone else thought Barbera deserved serious treatment, Scarpa did. The house has been around for more than 170 years, and back in the 1960s -- when Barbera was Piedmont's everyday drinker, made to be thrown back young and cheap -- Scarpa was already building versions meant to age. Briccomora comes from the I Bricchi estate, on the border between Castel Rocchero and Acqui, and it is pure Barbera: bright cherry and plum, a floral lift, and the grape's trademark blade of acidity holding everything upright. What sets it apart is the polish. The tannins are fine, the finish is long, and none of the rustic edge Barbera sometimes carries makes it into the glass. Piedmont's workhorse grape, treated like it matters.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

More about Scarpa

Scarpa is unique among all of Piedmont’s great wineries.

Like everyone else, they first go through the laborious process of growing and harvesting grapes, and then making wines. In Scarpa’s case they make 14 different wines -- all from grape varieties that are indigenous to Piedmont, some quite obscure. After resting in casks and then in the bottle, the wines are finished.

It’s at this moment that Scarpa’s unique approach takes over. Most wineries – almost every winery in Piedmont – at that point sells off their finished wines through a normal allocation process. But Scarpa just lets the wine sit there. The bottles are sent into the coldest reaches of their cellar to join more than 10,000 other bottles that are already just sitting there.

Once a year, the crew at Scarpa taste through bottles and decide which ones are perfect for current drinking. These are the wines that they sell.

Scarpa’s style is definitely old-fashioned. The winery is over 170 years old, and they change at a glacial pace. One innovation occurred back in the 1960s, when they pioneered the practice of taking Barbera seriously and making ageworthy examples. More recent “innovations” include single vineyard bottlings and organic farming. With such a long view of history, they have been able to maintain what they know works, while making a few changes here and there when they are confident of a good result.
