Setzer Weinviertel Gruner Veltliner Ausstich 2024

Ausstich means, roughly, the one that stands out. Generations ago the Setzers noticed a single cask tasting better than the rest, pulled it aside, and bottled it on its own — the name stuck, and it's now the family's calling card in the Weinviertel, the original home of peppery Grüner Veltliner. They've farmed Hohenwarth since 1705, on high limestone-laced soils that were once seabed, dry-farming and planting vines almost three times as densely as their neighbors do. This is Grüner in its classic Weinviertel dress: white pepper, citrus, bone-dry and crackling, with a salty finish that pulls you straight back in. Moderate in alcohol, immoderate in drinkability.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

More about Setzer

From the northern corner of Austria in the Weinviertel comes the small family estate of Setzer. This area was once an ancient seabed which is now laden with limestone, sand, and gravel, unique in the region. The limestone gives a new take on Grüner Veltliner with more mid palate lift and a salty finish, nearly Chablisienne. The family has moved towards organic methods, is increasing their high density selection massale plantings and use a deft hand in the cellar.
