Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 [NET]

$7799

Silver Oak built its reputation on one unwavering choice: American oak, and enough bottle age that the wine arrives ready to drink. Since 2015 the winery has owned its own cooperage in Higbee, Missouri, air-drying the staves outdoors for two years before a medium-light toast — a degree of control over barrels almost no other American winery has. The 2021 Alexander Valley is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged 24 months in those barrels and released four years after the harvest. Alexander Valley gives the plusher, more open-knit side of California Cabernet, which suits the house style exactly. Pour it tonight; it needs neither a decanter nor a cellar.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley is very closed aromatically, but it entices with its darker, more concentrated character than its typical red-fruited personality. The tannins are very, very subtle, pointing to a wine that feels like a medium-term proposition. Mocha, graphite, incense, leather and blackcurrant flavors saturate the palate, leaving behind an echo of American oak spice." —Billy Norris

"The 2021 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley was harvested between 4 September and 8 October. The blend comprises 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. After blending, it was barrel-aged for 24 months in American oak, 50% of which was new, followed by 14 months of bottle ageing prior to release. The wine is beautifully layered and highly fragrant, with remarkable precision and focus in this vintage. Medium- to full-bodied, it integrates the hallmark Silver Oak American spice character through cedarwood aromatics, elegant whispers of vanilla bean, and nuances of fresh fennel (from more refined American oak barrels crafted after precision trials of both seasoning and toasting from the American oak cooperage they own in Higbee, Missouri). Supple dark-cherry and blackberry fruit are framed by graphite minerality, violets and clove, building in richness and complexity across the palate. Suave and silken, the dark-berry fruit is wrapped in a tapestry of velvety tannins, gliding to a focused finish of brown baking spices and crisp, clean acidity."

More about Silver Oak

Silver Oak Cellars is now almost as famous as the Napa Valley itself, indeed you could say they "grew up" together. Founded in 1972 by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan, they chose to focus on a single varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet wasn't the 800lb gorilla of Napa Valley that it is today, but after their first vintage sold out quickly at the astronomical price of $6 a bottle (most Napa Cabs cost less than $3!) they knew they were on to something.

On pricing alone, you could say this was one of Napa’s first ‘cult’ wines. It developed a cult-like following for sure, but without the feeling of exclusivity that many of the so called cult wineries cultivate today. Silver Oak is an iconic wine meant to be shared with everyone.

A consistent style from the beginning, the wines are generous, concentrated and lushly balanced by Silver Oaks’ classic structure, acidity and oak spice. These attributes are enhanced with time as the wine's natural herbaceous qualities and dark savory character start to mingle with its generous fruit. Those of us lucky to have tried bottles from the 1980's and '90's know just how well they age.
