2017 is the vintage the Olds family will never forget: that October the Napa fires burned their home and tore through parts of the vineyard, and that this bottle exists at all is part of its story. The growing season had already been eventful, a hot dry summer driving the earliest harvest in the estate's history — picked in mid-August and in barrel by early September — and the fruit came in dense. Lore Olds planted Sky in 1973 at 2,100 feet on the eastern face of Mt. Veeder and has dry-farmed it ever since, organically for well over a decade now — off the power grid, hand-harvested into one-ton open-top bins, punched down by hand and pressed in a traditional basket press. Shallow red volcanic soils and mountain elevation are why this reads as a structured, savory red rather than a Napa fruit bomb: Zinfandel with acidity and grip. Drinking well now, with a few good years still in front of it.

"The 2017 Zinfandel Sky Vineyard is powerful, rich and also incredibly distinctive. Sweet tobacco, cedar, spice, leather and earthy notes give the Sky much of its complex, multifaceted personality. Then again, that is precisely what makes the best wines from Mt. Veeder so compelling." —Antonio Galloni

More about Sky Vineyards

Sky Vineyard makes real, honest, mountain Zins (and a little Syrah) 2100 feet up in Mt Veeder's red, volcanic soils. Lore Olds (yes, you can call these wines "Olds' school") has, since 1973, dry farmed naturally, with organic fertilizers, cover crops, birds, and beneficial insects rather than chemical inputs. He crushes in an old wooden basket press, punches down by hand and ages the wines in old French oak.
