2019 was the calm season — plenty of winter rain, a long even summer without heat spikes, and a later harvest, which on Mt. Veeder makes for the most classically proportioned of these Sky Zinfandels. Lore Olds planted the vineyard in 1973 at 2,100 feet on the mountain's eastern face: fourteen acres of shallow red volcanic soil, dry-farmed and organically farmed, the winery running on solar rather than the grid, the fruit hand-picked into one-ton open-top bins, punched down by hand three times a day and pressed in an old basket press. Olds's landscape paintings appear on many of the labels. Elevation is the point here — it holds acidity in a grape that usually loses it, so this drinks like a structured mountain red rather than a jammy Napa Zin. The youngest of these bottlings and the one with the most road ahead: good now with a decant, better in five years.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

More about Sky Vineyards

Sky Vineyard makes real, honest, mountain Zins (and a little Syrah) 2100 feet up in Mt Veeder's red, volcanic soils. Lore Olds (yes, you can call these wines "Olds' school") has, since 1973, dry farmed naturally, with organic fertilizers, cover crops, birds, and beneficial insects rather than chemical inputs. He crushes in an old wooden basket press, punches down by hand and ages the wines in old French oak.

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb, pepper-crusted steak, wild boar ragù, mushroom risotto, or an aged sheep's milk cheese.

Tasting Profile

Raspberry and dark cherry with violet, cracked pepper and a stony undertone. Medium- to full-bodied, bright acidity, fine-grained tannins still a little firm. Long and peppery on the finish; an hour in a decanter helps at this stage.
