Montalcino's great outlier: 100% Sangiovese, fermented by native yeasts in large Slavonian oak vats with no temperature control, then aged for years in big Slavonian casks. Gianfranco Soldera refused barriques outright, calling them a fix for wines that hadn't gotten enough from their grapes. A Milan insurance broker, he bought the derelict Case Basse property in 1972 and rebuilt it around two vineyards, Case Basse and Intistieti, at roughly 320 meters on Montalcino's southwestern flank, with his wife Graziella's botanical park of more than 1,500 rose varieties and its beehives doing the work chemicals do elsewhere. Output has always been tiny, around 15,000 bottles in a normal year, and the family has kept the method unchanged since Gianfranco's death in 2019. The wine goes out as Toscana IGT rather than Brunello, which tells you how much this house cares for categories. A frost in early April 2021 cut the crop, then a warm summer was tempered by late-August rain and cool September nights, giving a classically proportioned vintage built for the long haul.

"Tasted from barrel (botte number 10) at the winery, the Soldera Case Basse 2021 100% Sangiovese is shaping up to be an epic wine from an excellent vintage. It fully embraces the house style with a bright and luminous appearance that folds seamlessly into fresh berry, redcurrant, heritage rose, licorice root and an elegant note of wet slate or lingering petrichor. All of these beautiful varietal tones are wrapped tightly together and emerge with lifted intensity from the glass. I can't wait to taste this wine from bottle, when these various elements have had more time to amalgamate and settle. I also tasted the very punchy and fruit-forward 2022 vintage from barrel as well as the 2023 vintage that was still quite closed." —Monica Larner

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Bistecca alla fiorentina, pappardelle with wild boar ragu, roast squab, or aged Pecorino Toscano.

Tasting Profile

Bright and translucent rather than dark. Sour cherry, blood orange, dried rose and licorice over a savory, saline core, with high acidity and fine-grained tannins carrying a very long finish. Built for the cellar.
