Staglin Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 1994

A mature Rutherford Bench Cabernet from ground with real Napa pedigree: before the Staglins arrived, André Tchelistcheff pulled out a prune orchard here and planted vines for Beaulieu's Georges de Latour Private Reserve. Shari and Garen Staglin founded the estate in 1985 with Brandon and Shannon, and they worked closely with Tchelistcheff himself, so this 1994 Estate bottling comes from the family's first decade on the property. The site sits on an alluvial fan of volcanic soils at the foot of the western slopes of Mount St. John, the tallest peak in the Mayacamas Range. Its history goes back to 1864, when John and Mary Steckter bought the original 367-acre parcel. (The Staglins bought that original house back in 2007 and joined it to the vineyard again.) This isn't a bottle for showing off. Buy it to see what three decades do to Cabernet from one of Napa's classic pieces of land. Stand it upright a day before opening and pour carefully, because older reds often throw sediment.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rosemary-roasted rack of lamb; prime rib with jus; beef Wellington; wild mushroom risotto or porcini pappardelle; a wedge of aged Comté or clothbound cheddar.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Rutherford Cabernet profile: dark currant and black cherry, the dusty, cocoa-like earthiness locals call "Rutherford dust", and firm but fine-grained tannins. With long bottle age, Napa Cabernet of this kind typically softens and turns more savoury, adding cedar, tobacco, dried herbs and leather, and finishes dry and lingering. Think of a sunnier take on mature Bordeaux.
