Stolpman Vineyards Ballard Canyon Syrah The Great Places Jessica Lauren Stoplman 2024

This is Côte-Rôtie vine material growing in California: Syrah from a single parcel planted with cuttings from Domaine Clusel-Roch's 'Les Grandes Places', the Côte-Rôtie site that gives Stolpman's whole Great Places range its name. The range began in 2006, when Stolpman vigneron Ruben Solorzano visited Côte-Rôtie and found that the oldest Serine (pre-clonal Syrah) clusters looked and tasted more delicate than modern Syrah clones. The next year he started recreating those old parcels on Stolpman's steepest east-facing hillside in Ballard Canyon, which is the only AVA in the US dedicated to Syrah. The Jessica Lauren parcel was planted in 2016 and covers just under an acre. Its vines are own-rooted, head-pruned and planted at 6,000 vines per acre, so there will never be much of this wine. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic, and Stolpman plants its ungrafted vines straight into limestone, where they act like mature vines within a few years and need no irrigation. At the estate in 2024, plenty of late-winter rain pushed bud-break back a few weeks, the mature blocks were dry-farmed for the second year in a row, and the summer stayed mild until September warmed things up. If you love Northern Rhône Syrah, this is a fascinating comparison: vines from the same Côte-Rôtie source, grown on a different continent.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic; duck breast with a black-olive tapenade; smoked pork shoulder; mushroom and lentil ragout; pepper-crusted hanger steak.

Tasting Profile

Expect a more perfumed, finer-boned take on Syrah than California's riper styles: dark berries, violets, black olive and cracked pepper over a medium body. Limestone-grown Serine typically brings fresh acidity and fine, firm tannins, finishing dry and savoury. Think Northern Rhône Syrah with a touch more Californian sunshine in the fruit.
