Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2020

$24999

Some producers chase attention. The Valentini family has spent decades doing the opposite - no website, no cellar open to visitors, no samples sent to critics, and a willingness to declassify an entire vintage and sell it off in bulk if it doesn't measure up. What survives that filter is one of Italy's great white wines. It comes from old vines around Loreto Aprutino in Abruzzo, fermented with native yeasts, raised in large old oak, and held back in the cellar until the family decides it's ready. Trebbiano has a reputation as Italy's most forgettable white grape, and this bottle is the standing argument against that idea, with the ability to age for decades to back it up. There is very little of it, and there never will be more.

Antonio Galloni

"More savory than sweet, the 2020 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo slowly opens with a rich blend of raw almonds and smoky crushed stone, giving way to dried nectarines and hints of sage. This seductress is ripe and succulent upon entry, yet with a salty, sultry core of minerality, blending sour lime with apricots and liquid stone. The 2020 ends with a lemony concentration and herbal thrust, tapering off saline and lightly structured yet incredibly fresh. The 2020 is simply spellbinding." —Eric Guido

"This is always such an epic wine. A star of central Italy, the Valentini 2020 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is quite young but promises even greater complexity as it continues its bottle evolution. The mouthfeel is inescapably rich and textured, with creamy sensations that wrap over the palate. The wine's tactile character is remarkable. On the nose, you get an abundance of orchard fruit, kumquat, honey and apple pie with the crust. All that beautiful flavor intensity is capped by elegant silkiness and a moderate 12.5% alcohol content." —Monica Larner

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roasted branzino with olive oil and lemon, an Adriatic-style seafood brodetto, or aged pecorino.

Tasting Profile

Dry and understated at first, then long and savory - citrus and almond with a saline, mineral edge. Full-flavored without being heavy.
