The 2022 summer brought a rare, extended heat event in early September, and Vine Hill Ranch had its Cabernet largely picked before it began. The fruit came in between August 30 and September 13 from Blocks 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, after a drought year with roughly 30% of normal rainfall. Yields were tiny: two of the benchland blocks gave under two tons per acre. That's the kind of small crop the family calls exceptional in quality. The ranch is one of Oakville's longest-established Cabernet vineyards and sold its grapes to other Napa wineries from 1959. VHR is what the Phillips family made when, over three generations, they went from growing grapes to making their own wine, choosing specific blocks and even individual vine rows each year. Winemaker Françoise Peschon, who made wine at Araujo before coming here, calls the 2022 refined, well proportioned and still developing, so we'd give it some time in the cellar. Look at the label too: it lists blocks, vine counts, harvest dates and yields like a ledger, a nod to the old records kept by earlier growers on this land.

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is bold and super-expressive right out of the gate. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice, mocha and spice open gradually with a bit of coaxing. There is a bit of edginess in the tannins for a wine with such mid-weight structure. Hopefully, time in bottle will take care of that. This is a solid effort for the year. Harvest took place from August 30 to September 5." —Antonio Galloni

"According to Managing Partner Bruce Phillips, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon from Vine Hill Ranch includes only fruit that was picked prior to the Labor Day heat spike. Gentle vanilla shadings accent an attractive mix of red and black cherries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is concentrated and silky. This really seems to have it all, with a touch of warmth and some chocolaty notes on the lingering finish. It's a really solid effort." —Joe Czerwinski

"Deep purple. Thick luscious black fruit, savoury earth, and a vein of cedary spice. Lovely texture to the tannin, soft and silty balanced by fresh tangy acidity and fine cocoa flavour. Quite elegant for being so dense. A touch baked on the finish – something I would not have noticed if this wasn’t tasted next to the 2018. Overall lovely."

"The 2022 Vine Hill Ranch is a brooding, muscular wine showcasing blackberry fruit laced with violets, rose, and roasted walnut. Medium- to full-bodied, the palate is defined by long beams of cedar-rich tannins, framing juicy, brambly blackberry fruit, with hints of juniper and mulled spices adding depth. The lengthy finish carries both structure and warmth, making for a powerful yet refined expression of the vintage."

"There’s a clear edge of the vintage’s warmth, but it’s warm rather than sheer heat. This leaves the plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote notes with noticeable energy in the form of lively flecks of anise, violet and iris. This red pulses instead of just moves along, and a graphite spine delivers cut and drive as the fruit actually takes an encore—all rare aspects in this vintage. Bravo. Best from 2026 through 2038."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Dry-aged ribeye with a peppercorn crust; herb-crusted rack of lamb with rosemary and lavender; braised short ribs over polenta; wild mushroom and beef bourguignon.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Oakville Cabernet profile: blackcurrant and black cherry, with a savoury forest-floor and dried-herb note from the gravelly hillside blocks, framed by cedar and spice from new French oak. Full-bodied but polished, with fine, firm tannins and fresh acidity, it typically finishes long and dry, and is built to reward time in the cellar.
