Zorzal Tupungato Malbec Terroir Unico 2025

Malbec grown at 1,350 meters in Gualtallary on stony, sandy, distinctly limestone-rich soils, where the swing between day and night temperatures runs fifteen to eighteen degrees Celsius — which is why this tastes taut and mineral instead of plush. Zorzal is the Michelini brothers’ project, started in 2007 in the Uco Valley at what is reckoned the highest winery in Mendoza, and the whole approach runs against the Argentine grain: pick earlier than the neighbors, ferment with the vineyard’s own yeasts, keep the hand light and let the site do the talking. The fruit is picked by hand into small crates in the cool of the morning, cold-soaked, and fermented lot by lot. There is no heavy oak here and no attempt at sweetness or weight for their own sake. If your idea of Malbec is soft, dark and jammy, this is the bottle that changes your mind — and it does it for a fraction of what high-altitude Gualtallary fruit usually costs.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled skirt steak with chimichurri is the obvious and correct answer. It also works with lamb empanadas, chorizo off the grill, mushroom tacos, or a hard sheep’s-milk cheese.

Tasting Profile

Deep, bright red in the glass, with black plum, violet and a distinct stony edge. Medium-bodied and fresh, with fine, sharply drawn tannins and very little oak influence. The finish is savory and long.
