Danjean-Berthoux: White Burgundy from the Edges

Danjean-Berthoux: White Burgundy from the Edges

If you drive a few minutes west of Givry into the rolling hills of the Côte Chalonnaise, you’ll find yourself in the tiny, sleepy village of Jambles. This is the home of Domaine Danjean-Berthoux, a family estate now in its fourth generation that quietly produces some of the most over-performing white Burgundy in our cellars. While their neighbors in the Côte de Beaune are grappling with global fame and the soaring prices that come with it, Pascal Danjean and his son Charles-Antoine are still working their steep, limestone slopes with the focused, unhurried intensity of true artisans.

Their Premier Cru "La Plante" is a perfect example of why savvy Burgundy drinkers keep an eye on these "Edge" villages. The vineyard is a sun-drenched, south-facing amphitheater that allows Chardonnay to reach a level of ripeness and texture typically associated with much more famous (and expensive) appellations. In the exceptional 2022 vintage, this site truly sang. It was a year of abundance and light, resulting in a wine that manages a difficult trick: it is rich and expansive, yet it never loses its firm footing.

The 2022 La Plante opens with a luxurious nose of lemon curd, flowers, and just a hint of toasted almond from its time in French oak. On the palate, it has a "golden" weight—think ripe orchard fruit and a creamy texture—but it’s all pulled into a precise line by a streak of limestone minerality and fresh acidity. It has the "shoulders" of a great Meursault but carries the bright, honest energy that has made Givry a favorite of French kings for centuries…and now of our staff.

This is the kind of bottle that reminds us why we look past the famous labels. It is a sophisticated, deeply satisfying white Burgundy that is ready to be uncorked tonight alongside a roast chicken or a piece of flaky white fish in a lemon-butter sauce. If a wine this good came from just about any part of the world outside of Burgundy, it would be considered heroic Chardonnay. But lying, instead, in the shadows of the Cote de Beaune, it remains a fantastic bargain for our readers:
