L’Efecte Volador: A Very Non-Financial Wine
Josep Grau spent nearly twenty years in the high-frequency world of Barcelona finance before he realized he was looking for something that numbers couldn't provide. In 2003, he walked away from the spreadsheets to find a different kind of precision in the rugged hills of Montsant. If you met him today, you might still see the former accountant in his neatly pressed shirts, but his hands are now firmly in the dirt of his organic vineyards. He didn't come to the Langhe-like hills of Catalunya to make "big" wines; he came to find the silence and transparency he felt was missing from city life.
L’Efecte Volador, or "The Flying Effect" if you don’t speak Catalan, is the literal expression of that liberation. While the neighboring region of Priorat is famous for its dense, powerful reds, Josep uses the calcareous clay and slate of Montsant to craft something far more ethereal. This 2020 is a blend of Garnacha and Cariñena that never sees a splinter of new oak. Instead, it is fermented and aged in concrete vats—a choice Josep makes because concrete is honest. It doesn't mask the fruit with vanilla or spice; it simply lets the vibrant red berries and wild herbs speak for themselves.
The result is a wine that lives up to its name, possessing a weightlessness that is rare for this part of Spain. It pops with macerated cherries, pomegranate, and a distinct floral lift of violets and rosemary. There is no "finance-world" manipulation here; it is just pure, Mediterranean energy captured in a bottle. It’s the perfect reminder that sometimes the most sophisticated move you can make is to stop trying so hard. The 2020 – already going into its sixth year – is drinking beautifully right now, offering a snap of acidity and a savory mineral finish that makes it far too easy to finish a bottle.
