A&E Verset: A New Chapter in Cornas

A&E Verset: A New Chapter in Cornas

In the tightly knit world of Cornas, the name Verset carries a weight almost heavier than the granite soils themselves. For decades, Noël Verset was the benchmark, the genius who put this rugged appellation on the map. When he retired in 2006, it felt like the end of an era, but the vines—and the lineage—did not simply disappear. This brings us to A&E Verset, a domaine run by Emmanuelle Verset, the daughter of Alain and the grand-niece of the legendary Noël. While the name draws you in, it is the wine in the glass that keeps you there, proving that this is not just a case of resting on genealogical laurels.

The most critical inheritance here was not just the surname, but the terroir. Emmanuelle has custody of some of the most hallowed ground in the Northern Rhône. From Noël, she inherited parcels in Champelrose; from her grandfather Louis, she received vines in the illustrious Geynale and Les Mazards lieux-dits. These include parcels of Syrah that are over one hundred years old, the kind of genetic material that produces wines of profound depth and complexity. It is arguably one of the finest collections of terroir in the entire village, sitting right there in plain sight.

However, great terroir requires a steady hand, and the domaine has undergone a renaissance under Emmanuelle’s leadership. Since taking the reins from her father, Alain, she has quietly revolutionized the estate. She converted the farming to organics and modernized the cellar, introducing temperature control and a pneumatic press—tools that allow for a cleaner, more precise expression of fruit without sacrificing the rustic soul of Cornas. The wines have shifted from the sometimes-volatile style of the past to something far more focused, pure, and transparent.

We are thrilled to offer the 2023 vintage, a year that produced wines of generous fruit and sturdy structure. The lineup includes a rare white wine, a pure Viognier that offers a break from the intensity of the reds, as well as the classic Cornas. But the crown jewel is the Cornas "Signature," a cuvée crafted from those ancient vines in Geynale and Mazards. It is a wine that feels like a direct link to the golden age of the appellation, combining the brooding, meaty power of old-school Syrah with a newfound level of polish.

It is rare to find a producer with this pedigree and these assets where the pricing hasn't yet caught up to the quality. For lovers of traditional Northern Rhône wines, this feels like getting in on the ground floor of something special. The wines of A&E Verset are no longer just a footnote in the family history; they are writing a brilliant new chapter, and we suspect they won't remain a well-kept secret for much longer.
