Mustiguillo and the Great Values of Valencia
Valencia is often overlooked in Spain’s wine conversation. It’s time to take a look at what this dynamic region is producing.
First, let’s talk about Spain’s interesting Vino de Pago classification. This classification – we believe this is unique in the world – is awarded to an individual wine estate that has its own terroir that distinguishes it from its neighbors, and meets various other quality criteria. In French terms, it’s a bit like a Grand Cru “monopole” in Burgundy, or Chateau Grillet (the great producer of Viognier that gets an AOC all to itself).
This has been awarded to Bodegas Mustiguillo, and their El Terrerazo Mestizaje wines, both red and white. Unlike the Grand Crus of Burgundy, these wines are downright cheap!
The Mestizaje Tinto 2021 is built around Bobal, a native grape once dismissed as rustic but now recognized for its depth and structure. Mustiguillo pioneered Bobal’s revival, proving it could produce serious wines with dark fruit, spice, and freshness. Here, it’s blended with Syrah, Garnacha, and Tempranillo. Grown at high elevations in limestone-rich soils, it has a natural brightness that sets it apart from heavier Mediterranean reds.
On the white side, the Mestizaje Blanco 2022 showcases Merseguera, another local variety once left behind in favor of more commercial grapes. Mustiguillo has given it new life, crafting a wine that is aromatic, mineral-driven, and incredibly fresh. A small addition of Viognier and Malvasía adds texture and floral complexity, but the soul of the wine remains Mediterranean: citrus, white flowers, and a distinct saline edge from the limestone soils.
Spain is starting to look more and more like the wine scene in Italy, with lesser-known regions surging forward to show off their own native varieties and traditions. These offer great opportunities to seek out wine adventure and value!
