Occhipinti: Still Changing the Conversation

At this point, we’ve written about Arianna Occhipinti so many times that coming up with something new feels like a challenge. We’ve talked about her commitment to organic farming, her influence on Sicily’s natural wine movement, and how her wines—today we have SP68 Rosso, SP68 Bianco, and Il Frappato—offer some of the purest expressions of the Vittoria region.

But here’s something worth reflecting on: Arianna didn’t just introduce the world to Vittoria—she redefined how people see it. Her uncle, Giusto Occhipinti, was already making world-class wines under the COS label, proving that Vittoria’s terroir deserved as much attention as Etna’s volcanic slopes. Yet, it was Arianna who made Vittoria’s wines feel essential, personal, and alive to a new generation of drinkers. Through her lens, Frappato and Nero d’Avola weren’t just historical Sicilian grapes intended for mass-produced supermarket wines—they became key ingredients for finesse, transparency, and a kind of soulful elegance that set them apart from our prior prejudices about non-Etna Sicily.

Her SP68 Rosso continues to be one of the most effortless, drinkable expressions of Vittoria—light on its feet but unmistakably Sicilian. The SP68 Bianco, a skin-contact blend of Zibibbo and Albanello, is floral, salty, and endlessly complex. And then there’s Il Frappato, a wine that helped change the grape’s reputation from something simple and rustic to something serious, expressive, and downright beautiful.

So yes, we’ve said it before: Occhipinti’s wines are worth your time. But each year, they remind us that they’re more than just delicious—they’re part of a larger story. A story of place, family, and the ongoing evolution of what Sicilian wine can be.
