Scarpa: Freshness and Seriousness Combined
In the historic town of Nizza Monferrato, Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa has long stood as a bastion of unyielding tradition. While many producers in the region spent the 1990s and 2000s chasing darker colors and softer tannins through the use of new French barriques and other techniques, Scarpa refused to change. Walking into their cellar feels like stepping back in time; it is a place where large, neutral oak casks dominate and where patience is the primary tool of the winemaker. This steadfast dedication has preserved the style of Piedmontese wine that we admire most: nervy, elegant, and built for the long haul.
Barbera is often dismissed as a simple, happy wine for the trattoria, destined to be consumed young and without much thought. Scarpa, however, treats Barbera with the same reverence that the Langhe reserves for Nebbiolo. They believe the grape is capable of profound complexity if yields are kept low and the wine is allowed to express its natural high acidity.
The 2023 Briccomora is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, a choice made to preserve the electric, primary fruit character of the harvest. Yet, calling this a "simple" stainless steel wine would be a mistake. Because Scarpa harvests on the early side, the wine retains a tension and vibration that is thrilling. It pours a brilliant ruby violet and explodes with aromas of tart cherry, crushed raspberry, and a distinct ferrous minerality that speaks of the Monferrato soils.
Absolutely, you can enjoy this like you would any Barbera, and sip it with a simple meal, even take-out pizza. But the more you drink this wine, the more you realize how much is going on. It does not have the structure of, say, a Barbaresco, but it has real depth: layers of flavor that open up as the wine evolves in your glass. Truly, it is a wine worthy of an elegant Italian meal.
