Musigny is the vineyard Comte Georges de Vogüé is built around: 7.2 of the domaine's 12.6 hectares are in this Grand Cru, and the Vieilles Vignes is the old-vine bottling from those holdings. The vines grow in thin topsoil over limestone and are farmed by lutte raisonnée, a sustainable approach. Every row is ploughed, no chemical fertilisers are used and herbs planted between the rows keep pests down. The 2009 was made under François Millet, part of a team that had been at the domaine since 1986. The family behind it has its own long run, now in its 20th generation with Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette. A Musigny Vieilles Vignes with real bottle age is a rare chance to see what this site becomes with time, and nobody needs to be talked into that.

"A fantastically complex nose offers up aromas of rose petals, violets, mint, cassis, black berry and a plethora of spice nuances that continue onto the intense and remarkably powerful imposingly constructed flavors that are blessed with buckets of dry extract that render the presently rigid tannic spine almost invisible on the impeccably and palate staining finish that seems to persist without end. As was the case from cask, I could still taste this several hours later and if given sufficient cellar time, this should be a very fine vintage for this storied wine." —Allen Meadows

"The 2009 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is one of the most successful wines of François Millet's reign. This has light bricking on the rim. The bouquet bursts forth with red berry fruit, shoe leather and menthol, crushed flowers and sous-bois. Maybe it would benefit from a little more delineation? The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-boned tannins, an unerring symmetry and a silky-smooth texture. Hints of spice appear towards the tender and long finish. Superb. Tasted blind at a 2009 horizontal at Club 1243." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or pigeon with a jus; truffled roast chicken (poulet de Bresse); beef tenderloin with morel cream sauce; wild mushroom risotto; aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Musigny profile: a perfumed nose of violets, dark cherry and red berries with a fine mineral edge, the old vines adding depth and concentration. De Vogüé's style is dense yet silky, with firm, fine-grained tannin and fresh acidity built for long ageing. With time it typically moves towards forest floor and spice, finishing long and savoury.
