De Vogüé's few rows of Les Amoureuses sit at the very top of the vineyard, with only a small road between them and grand cru Musigny, and this premier cru doesn't act like a junior wine. It's a powerful, sultry Amoureuses that ages at the same pace as the top grand crus. Tasted side by side with the Musigny, it comes across as a subset of it. The parcel is tiny, about 0.6 hectares (1.4 acres) of light-coloured, lighter-textured soil studded with limestone rocks, and most of the vines date to 1974, with some from 1964. All of de Vogüé's vines are ploughed and get no chemical fertilizers, with herbs planted between the rows to keep pests in check. This is a house whose wines are built to come into their own at around 30 years rather than 10.

"Here the nose is much more reserved if not backwards with a wonderfully spicy and slightly riper blend of red, blue and violet aromas that are also extremely seductive while dissolving into precise, dusty, intense and balanced flavors that offer up even more minerality than usual on the vibrant and driving finish. This should mature over the next decade and drink well for another." —Allen Meadows

"Medium red. Lively aromas of raspberry, minerals, flowers and menthol. Suave, sappy and juicy, with lovely sneaky flavor intensity to the deep red fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes quite dry and pure, with building, dusty tannins, firm mineral grip and lovely lingering perfume." —Stephen Tanzer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or pigeon with a jus; duck breast with cherries; pheasant with chanterelles; wild mushroom risotto; a simple roast chicken with morels.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Chambolle-Musigny perfume of red cherry, raspberry and violets, with savoury, earthy and spice notes developing with age. Typically silky and fine-grained but deeper and more structured than most premier crus, with bright acidity and a long, mineral finish. Think Chambolle's elegance carrying the weight of a top grand cru, built for long cellaring.
