Comte Georges de Vogüé is the name people tie to Musigny, but the domaine's Bonnes-Mares is where you find the house's broader-shouldered side, and it's worth knowing in its own right. All of the domaine's 2.7 hectares sit on the Chambolle end of the grand cru. That side has more red clay than the marl and limestone that run through the Morey side. That clay is why de Vogüé's version comes out rounder and more velvety, with aromas of violets and wildflowers. The vines average around 45 years old, and the soils are ploughed, no chemical fertilizers go on, and herbs grow between the rows to keep pests down. In the cellar the approach is just as hands-off. As is the house's practice, grapes are hand-picked into small crates and fermented on native yeasts with only gentle pump-overs. The family's history here spans more than 550 years, and today the estate is run by 20th-generation descendants Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette. The domaine makes only about 420 cases of Bonnes-Mares in an average year, so when you see a bottle, grab it.

"From a very large 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the far southern portion of the vineyard. A slightly riper combination presents its aromas of both red and dark currant, earth and subtle spice elements. I very much like the texture and punch of the acceptably concentrated flavors that possess more size and weight if less minerality on the firmer and well-balanced finale. This is not a big wine by the standards of either the domaine or the appellation but it's well-proportioned and harmonious."

"The 2024 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an almost "mellow" nose, as if it were observing Musigny being picked apart by the growing season, relieved not to be taking the brunt. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a fine bead of acidity, bright and tensile with an edgy red peppercorn-tinged finish. I admire the nascent energy in this cuvée and though it misses a bit of Grand Cru grandeur on the finish it should give a lot of pleasure." —Neal Martin

"Manager Jean Lupatelli explains that Bonne-Mares was less affected by the weather in 2024 than Musigny; his results attest to the potential of the wines produced here. The fruit aromas are rich and spicy, with a mulberry scent and a hint of earth and iron. The texture is powerful and structured, but the wine remains approachable. This will open in three to five years and should drink well for decades."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or pigeon with a red wine jus, duck breast with cherries, venison loin with juniper, mushroom and truffle risotto, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect a broader-shouldered, more structured style of grand cru Chambolle: dark cherry and black raspberry with violets, wildflowers and a savoury, earthy edge from the red clay. Typically full and velvety for Pinot Noir, with firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long. Think a sturdier, deeper counterpart to the house's silky Musigny, built to age.
