A Helles is about the hardest beer there is to fake: nothing loud to hide behind, just malt, hops and patience. Gold Dot gets all three right, and the brewers call this one their "instant classic." The grain is a heritage German barley, mashed carefully to get its full expression. The hops are a blend of gentle, low-alpha varieties from Germany's Hallertau region. Then the beer gets a long, cold lagering for roundness and maturity, which fits the house philosophy of using the best ingredients available and giving the beer the time it needs. Gold Dot comes from Lisa Allen and Kevin Davey, and it is brewed and canned at Heater Allen Brewing in McMinnville, Oregon. Davey came up with the idea for Cold IPA while he was at Wayfinder, so this simple, polished lager comes from someone who knows plenty about trends and chose not to follow them. At 4.9%, it's an easy beer to keep drinking.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Weisswurst with sweet mustard and soft pretzels; pork schnitzel with potato salad; grilled bratwurst and sauerkraut; Obatzda cheese spread on rye; fish and chips; Buffalo-style fried chicken.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Munich Helles profile: pale gold, with soft bready, cracker-like malt and a hint of honey from the German barley, lifted by gentle floral, herbal Hallertau hops. Typically light-bodied and smooth, rounded out by the long cold lagering, with low bitterness and a crisp, clean finish. Think of a softer, maltier Pilsner.
