The flagship blend—assembled from 20 different parcels across 15–16 named vineyard sites throughout Côte-Rôtie. Ampodium (formerly called 'Classique') captures the full range of the appellation in one bottle: fruit from both Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, blended to show Côte-Rôtie's complete personality. René Rostaing began in 1971; his son Pierre now manages over 20 acres of the appellation's finest sites, inherited from legends Marius Gentaz and Albert Dervieux. At least 40% destemmed, 15–25% new French oak, aged approximately 22 months. The most accessible Rostaing, but don't mistake accessibility for simplicity.

Even casual enjoyers of Northern Rhône Syrah will likely have heard of Domaine Rostaing. More devoted followers also know of the important connection between René Rostaing and perhaps the 2 most iconic figures in Cornas, Albert Dervieux and Marius Gentaz. But for the rest of us here’s a brief summary and recap.

In 1971 René founded his domaine with a few parcels in Cornas. Then in 1989 his father-in-law, msgn. Dervieux retired followed shortly after by his uncle msgn. Gentaz. And presto: Domaine Rostaing had just acquired some of the most hallowed vines in Cornas, and really anywhere in France. The wines of Dervieux-Gentaz are now among the most sought after bottles in the world and are becoming ever more phantasmic and unicorn-esque with each cork that is pulled.

Pierre Rostaing, René’s son, is now running the estate and has changed very little. He continues to uphold the staunch traditions of his father, grandfather and great uncle, and if anything many believe the wines are better than ever.

AG 93
"The 2023 Côte-Rôtie Ampodium breathes out alluring orange rind, crushed violets, fresh-cut ripe blackberry, red plum and fragments of black cherry. Stemmy tones add more complexity. Round and concentrated, the 2023 hits the mid-bodied palate with immaculate fresh clarity, easing the last impressions with juicy dark cherries and finely expressed spicy tones." -Nicolas Greinacher
