Rene Rostaing Cote-Rotie Cote Brune 2023 [NET]

$33999

Pure Syrah from the iron-rich, dark mica-schist soils of Côte Brune—the more powerful, austere half of Côte-Rôtie. René Rostaing began tending family plots in 1971; when his father-in-law Albert Dervieux retired in 1989 and uncle Marius Gentaz in 1993, he inherited their prized old vines and went full-time. Today his son Pierre manages over 20 acres of the appellation's finest sites. This separate Côte Brune bottling (from a 0.3-hectare plot, first produced in 2013) showcases the site's characteristic density, dark fruit, and iron-mineral backbone. Aged 18–24 months in mostly older oak. Unfined, unfiltered.

"The 2023 Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune lets out early fragrances of pronounced orange rind, dried violets, gently detailed elderflower, stems and black cherry brush trails. Sumptuously weighted, dense and concentrated, the 2023 is a serious Côte Brune from the talented Pierre Rostaing. Profoundly structured, it winds down with stunning length and breadth on the long finale." —Nicolas Greinacher

More about Rene Rostaing

Even casual enjoyers of Northern Rhône Syrah will likely have heard of Domaine Rostaing. More devoted followers also know of the important connection between René Rostaing and perhaps the 2 most iconic figures in Cornas, Albert Dervieux and Marius Gentaz. But for the rest of us here’s a brief summary and recap.

In 1971 René founded his domaine with a few parcels in Cornas. Then in 1989 his father-in-law, msgn. Dervieux retired followed shortly after by his uncle msgn. Gentaz. And presto: Domaine Rostaing had just acquired some of the most hallowed vines in Cornas, and really anywhere in France. The wines of Dervieux-Gentaz are now among the most sought after bottles in the world and are becoming ever more phantasmic and unicorn-esque with each cork that is pulled.

Pierre Rostaing, René’s son, is now running the estate and has changed very little. He continues to uphold the staunch traditions of his father, grandfather and great uncle, and if anything many believe the wines are better than ever.
