Abadia da Cova Ribeira Sacra Volta 2023

A Ribeira Sacra white built from two family vineyards on two different rocks: Godello grown on slate out by the Valdeorras border, and 45-year-old Albariño grown on granite right below the winery. The 2023 is half Godello and 40% Albariño, with small amounts of Treixadura, Branco Lexítimo and Loureira making up the rest. Siblings Paloma and Adrián Rodríguez Moure and their cousin José Moure run the winery in A Cova, a tiny village on the banks of the Miño. They're the fourth generation. They farm organically (they practise it but aren't certified), ferment each plot separately with native yeasts in stainless steel, and leave the wine on its lees in tank for five months, so nothing stands between you and the two sites. As Ribeira Sacra warms, the cooler Ribeiras do Miño subzone and high-acid grapes are set to matter more and more for quality, and a 12.5% white like this one shows why. If you think Galician white starts and stops with Rías Baixas Albariño, this is a great-value detour.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pulpo a la gallega with paprika and olive oil; grilled sardines or razor clams; empanada gallega with tuna; steamed mussels with garlic and parsley; scallops with a little lemon.

Tasting Profile

Expect a crisp, dry Galician white: citrus, white peach and orchard fruit from the Albariño, with the Godello adding a rounder, gently textured middle and a stony, saline edge. Steel fermentation and time on lees typically bring freshness and a touch of creaminess, with no oak. Think Rías Baixas Albariño with a little more weight and minerality, finishing bright and clean.
