Aston Pinot Noir Estate 2022

This is the brooding, serious side of far-coast Sonoma Pinot Noir. In 2022 Thomas Rivers Brown says it has plenty of the reductive, dark character he has always looked for in his best Pinots, and a seriousness that sets it apart from his Sonoma Coast bottling. His vineyard sits near the remote township of Annapolis, five miles and two ridgelines in from the Pacific. That puts it close enough for the ocean's cooling but just outside the fog line, on gentle southwest-facing slopes of Goldridge loam that the estate compares to the lie of Burgundy's grand crus. For this bottling Brown picked only three lots: the upper ridge of clone 777 and the heart of the 115 and 667 blocks. The 2022 harvest was warm, and the wine is bigger than the last few vintages, but mouthwatering acidity and a rugged texture keep it in check. Only 860 cases were made. If you think California Pinot means sweet fruit, try this one: in Brown's words, Annapolis is "all about savory."

Robert Parker

"The 2022 Estate Pinot Noir is spicy and savory aromatically, with notes of incense, star anise, red cherry, a lick of kirsch, blood plum and finely ground peppercorns of a variety of colors. The wine is balanced and on the leaner side, but it bodes well for the elongated and lingering finish. This is a possessing wine. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." —Erin Larkin

"This is distinctive, offering zesty bramble and chaparral hints that bounce around a core of steeped mulberry and blackberry fruit. Shows good energy through the toasted finish, with a late minerally twang adding nice contrast. Drink now through 2030."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Porcini risotto, roast duck breast with cherry sauce, herb-crusted lamb chops, slow-smoked pork shoulder, grilled quail with wild mushrooms.

Tasting Profile

Savory aromas of black tea, forest floor, porcini, sweet tobacco and dark minerals. The palate brings black cherry and plum, then smoky, meaty notes with hints of white flowers and peppery herbs. It's a bigger Pinot than usual, with mouthwatering acidity and a rugged texture that keep it in balance.
