Aston says these two corners of the Sonoma Coast have almost nothing in common, and that's exactly why this bottle works. The 2023 blends 62% fruit from the Aston Estate near remote Annapolis, which brings dark, brooding savoriness, with 38% from the Riddle Vineyard in Occidental, which brings lifted red and orange-toned aromatics. The estate sits about five miles and two ridge lines in from the Pacific, just outside the fog line. Its vines grow on southwest-facing Goldridge loam, on gentle slopes that Thomas Rivers Brown compares to Burgundy's grand cru sites, a rugged parcel he found in 2000. As those vines have aged, they ripen fully at lower sugar levels. That has taken the house style from big to refined without losing the power Annapolis is known for. The producer's stated goal for this cuvée is to overdeliver for its price, and they call 2023 an overachiever. We'd call it a smart way into a serious small estate (only 774 cases were made).

"The 2023 Estate Pinot Noir is stylish, red-fruited, floral and fine. It has notes of beeswax and clove, cherry and blood orange. The wine is super elegant and fine, with a flow of red fruit across the palate that feels like a harness of the cool season that birthed it. This is very good, silky. The fruit for this wine is from the Ashton Hills vineyard—hence, "estate"—and was handpicked, keeping the clones D5V12 (42%), 777 (25%), Martini (22%), MV6 (9%) and 828 (2%) separate. It was wild fermented in small open-top fermenters with 14% whole bunches and basket pressed to French oak barriques (17% new) for nine months' maturation. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." —Erin Larkin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast pork tenderloin with sage, seared duck breast with cherry sauce, wild mushroom risotto, grilled salmon with herbs, roast chicken with thyme and root vegetables.

Tasting Profile

Crunchy red fruit that turns to black raspberry, with floral notes, wet gravel and a salty, mineral edge. Herbal lift of mint, sage and forest floor. It has some weight but stays light and fresh.
