An estate-grown Oakville Cabernet with a good story behind it, and one you won't often see. The family says it goes only to fine-wine merchants and selected restaurants in California. The name dates to 1849, when the owner's great-great-grandfather R.M. Hamilton went into partnership with L.L. Baker, selling tools and provisions to miners and ranchers out of a canvas tent in Gold Country. The label is a tribute to the old Baker & Hamilton catalogues, which were packed with drawings of equipment, and the family still farms its Oakville vineyard with versions of those same tools. We find that a lot more charming than another embossed crest. The fruit comes from Vine Hill Ranch, at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains. Grapes from that site went into Beaulieu's Georges de Latour and the Robert Mondavi Reserve in the 1960s and '70s. It's serious Napa pedigree without the swagger: a family Cabernet meant to be opened with dinner, not kept on display.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon from Baker & Hamilton is fabulous. Medium in body and beautifully layered, the 2023 graces the palate with lovely red/purplish-toned fruit lifted by soaring floral aromatics. Time in the glass releases hints of lavender, cinnamon and new leather. Fine-grained tannins round things out in style. This supremely elegant Cabernet Sauvignon is irresistibly sexy." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"This 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is something of a second label for Vine Hill Ranch, incorporating more benchland and fewer hillside parcels, as well as some young vine material. It's focused on national distribution rather than direct to consumer, so readers may find it out there in the wild, perhaps at upscale steakhouses and the like. Cherries are joined by gentle herbal nuances and a hint of vanilla in this medium- to full-bodied wine. It's still structured and firm, like its big brother, but with slightly less depth and richness. Given the quality and provenance, it provides reasonable value." —Joe Czerwinski

"The Baker & Hamilton Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is a powerful, beautifully built wine in this cool, impressively balanced vintage. Full-bodied and driven by red and black cherry fruit, it delivers deliciously juicy dark fruit layered with sagebrush spice and elegant cedarwood notes. The tannins are muscular yet refined, gathering momentum and building through the finish."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Dry-aged ribeye with a peppercorn crust; braised short ribs over polenta; rosemary-and-garlic leg of lamb; a burger with aged cheddar and grilled onions.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Oakville Cabernet profile: ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum, with hints of cedar, cocoa and dried herbs. Typically full-bodied, with firm but polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. It's Napa Cabernet in its structured, elegant form, generous enough to enjoy now and built to age.
