Baraveou Bandol Rose 2025

$4899

If you have ever wondered who actually tends Domaine Tempier's vines, it is Jean-Philippe Fourney, and this is the Bandol he makes on his own time. Fourney started Baraveou in 2011, rebuilding abandoned terraces into about four hectares: 3.5 in La Cadiere-d'Azur on red Triassic clay and gypsum, plus a hectare of 40-year-old vines in Le Castellet on limestone marl and sandstone, all farmed without chemical inputs and ploughed by horse. Where Tempier's brilliance comes from blending a mosaic of sites across the appellation, Baraveou is a study in one cool, high amphitheater ringed by pine forest and garrigue, and the wines come out tightly coiled and electric rather than broad. The rose is Mourvedre-led, with real grip and salinity, miles from the easy sipper that the word rose usually conjures. Drink it with food and treat it like a great Provencal white; total production across both colors averages only about 9,500 bottles.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled rouget or branzino with fennel; bouillabaisse; saffron-laced paella; ratatouille; salade nicoise; soft chevre with herbs.

Tasting Profile

Dry, pale salmon and medium-bodied. Wild strawberry, blood orange, watermelon rind and dried herbs over a salty mineral finish. Real structure and grip for a rose, and young enough to reward a year in the cellar.
