Baraveou Bandol Rouge 2024

$7499

Bandol demands patience: the appellation requires at least 50% Mourvedre and a minimum of 18 months in wood before a red can be released, which is a large part of why so few people make it well. Jean-Philippe Fourney is Domaine Tempier's chef de culture, and Baraveou is the roughly four-hectare estate he built for himself out of abandoned terraces beginning in 2011, with 3.5 hectares in La Cadiere-d'Azur on red Triassic clay and gypsum and older vines in Le Castellet on limestone marl and sandstone. He farms biodynamically and ploughs with a horse, destems the fruit and ferments with minimal additions, aiming for a red that is deep and pulpy with velvety tannins rather than the tar-and-leather austerity young Mourvedre can deliver. Total production across all colors averages about 9,500 bottles a year. Open it now alongside something off the grill, or put it away: well-made Bandol rouge routinely goes ten to twenty years.
