Three decades on, the 1994 Georges de Latour Private Reserve is a chance to drink the wine that set the standard for Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon. The cuvée exists because of André Tchelistcheff. When he arrived at BV, he tasted a special lot of 1936 Cabernet that the de Latour family kept as their private wine, and he insisted it be bottled on its own. That wine was released in 1941 as the first Private Reserve. Georges de Latour's answer was that all his wines should be that good, and that this was exactly why he'd hired Tchelistcheff. Even the winery's name has a story: when Georges and Fernande de Latour bought their first four acres in Rutherford in 1900, Fernande called it "Quel beau lieu!" ("What a beautiful place!"). BV calls this Napa's original cult Cabernet, and the label means more than any trophy: this is the wine later Napa icons were measured against. Open it and enjoy it with dinner. An older bottle like this rewards a gentle pour and a little patience in the glass.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Standing rib roast with jus; rosemary-roasted leg of lamb; braised short ribs over polenta; wild mushroom risotto finished with aged Parmigiano; a simple plate of aged Comté or cheddar after the main course.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Rutherford Cabernet profile: blackcurrant and black cherry, cedar and tobacco, and the dusty, earthy character known as "Rutherford dust." Typically full-bodied with firm tannins and fresh acidity, these wines soften with long bottle age into savoury, leathery tones and a long, dry finish (think of a mature Left Bank Bordeaux).
