"The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, raised in a single 350-litre used barrel, was racked the week before my visit. As the first barrel was new, the wood influence is quite pronounced at the moment, though that will be assimilated by the time of bottling. The palate is fresh and delineated with candied orange peel and apricot notes. Again, there is a touch of vanilla from new oak but again, that will go with time. Good depth and very persistent on the finish. Very good potential but it will require cellaring." —Neal Martin

"Moreau produced 350 liters of the 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, a wine that was fermented in a new large barrel before being racked to a three-year-old barrel to finish its élevage on the lees. Offering up inviting aromas of crisp orchard fruit, mint, nutmeg and baking spices, it's full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a bright, chiseled profile and fine depth at the core." —William Kelley

More about Bernard Moreau et Fils

Domaine Bernard Moreau has always been a great producer: superb vineyards, great farming, and careful work in the cellar. It is difficult and painstaking work to improve something that is already near its best. Throughout their long tenure Alex and Benoît Moreau have continued to make tiny improvements year after year, vintage after vintage. Their dedication has paid off and they have reached the top tier of white Burgundy producers. I think of them as the Roulot of Chassagne in terms of leanness, minerality, and letting terroir speak.

Alex and Benoît have been in total control of the domaine since 1999, after completing formal studies and long apprenticeships abroad. Alex is the winemaker, Benoît concentrates on the farming, and they both work on the now extended élevage. These two have reinvigorated their two hundred-year-old family property, the wines are better than they ever have been.
