Bodegas Mustiguillo El Terrerazo Mestizaje Tinto 2022

$1799

Spain's Vino de Pago system hands a single estate its own appellation, which is about as close as the country gets to a Burgundian grand cru monopole, and El Terrerazo was the first in the Mediterranean to earn one, in 2010. Toni Sarrion built Mustiguillo around Bobal, a native grape long written off as bulk-wine filler, and this is the bottling that shows why he bothered: Bobal with Garnacha and Syrah, grown at around 800 metres on dolomitic limestone with a chalky, sandy texture that drains hard. The altitude and Bobal's own natural acidity give it a brightness you rarely meet in Mediterranean reds. Each plot and variety ferments separately, and the wine is aged about ten months in a mix of French oak casks and large tanks, so the fruit stays out front. A Pago-classified estate at everyday-drinking scale.

"The 2022 Mestizaje from Utiel-Requena, located outside the DO, begins with plum, soft oak and a touch of warmth, later opening to chocolate. On the palate, fine reactive tannins frame a clear fruit character with grip and modern polish. A contemporary red from Valencia classified among the Grandes Vinos de España." —Joaquín Hidalgo

More about Bodegas Mustiguillo

Valencia is often overlooked in Spain’s wine conversation. It’s time to take a look at what this dynamic region is producing.

First, let’s talk about Spain’s interesting Vino de Pago classification. This classification – we believe this is unique in the world – is awarded to an individual wine estate that has its own terroir that distinguishes it from its neighbors, and meets various other quality criteria. In French terms, it’s a bit like a Grand Cru “monopole” in Burgundy, or Chateau Grillet (the great producer of Viognier that gets an AOC all to itself).

This has been awarded to Bodegas Mustiguillo, and their El Terrerazo Mestizaje wines, both red and white. Unlike the Grand Crus of Burgundy, these wines are downright cheap!
