Bodegas Mustiguillo Mestizaje Blanco 2023

$1799

Merseguera is a Valencian white that growers abandoned in favor of more commercial grapes, and Mustiguillo has spent years proving it deserved better. The fruit comes from Finca Calvestra, a vineyard the estate planted at around 900 metres in the hills of Utiel, higher than anyone in the region had gone to grow vines, on chalky-sandy dolomitic limestone. Merseguera leads, with Viognier and Malvasia filling out the texture and adding a floral note; each variety is fermented separately with native yeast at cool temperatures in stainless steel, then held on its fine lees until bottling. What comes out is aromatic and mineral, with a saline snap that comes straight off the limestone. Drink it cold, and within a few years of the vintage.

More about Bodegas Mustiguillo

Valencia is often overlooked in Spain’s wine conversation. It’s time to take a look at what this dynamic region is producing.

First, let’s talk about Spain’s interesting Vino de Pago classification. This classification – we believe this is unique in the world – is awarded to an individual wine estate that has its own terroir that distinguishes it from its neighbors, and meets various other quality criteria. In French terms, it’s a bit like a Grand Cru “monopole” in Burgundy, or Chateau Grillet (the great producer of Viognier that gets an AOC all to itself).

This has been awarded to Bodegas Mustiguillo, and their El Terrerazo Mestizaje wines, both red and white. Unlike the Grand Crus of Burgundy, these wines are downright cheap!
