Bohigas Cava Brut Reserva NV

$1899

From the producer:

Varieties /
55% Xarel·lo, 30% Macabeo, 15% Parellada.

Colour, aroma, structure /
Pale yellow.Fine bubbles forming a constant rosary and persistent crown.
Very fresh aroma of white fruit (tart apple and pear) on notes of citric rind and white flowers.Spicy bouquet due to ageing (cinnamon) and biscuits.
A structured cava on the palate, well balanced acidity that tenses the whole from beginning to finish. The bubble gives a sensation of creaminess, providing volume and softness to the structure bestowed by the acidity and extending the aromas of white fruit and spices that repeat on the palate. Balanced finish that harmonises its acidity, leaving behind a sensation of freshness and volume due to its slight content in sugars.

Pairing /
Fish, rice dishes and dried fruit and nuts. It is also the ideal cava to accompany a whole meal.

Robert Parker

90 points

"My favorite of the two sparkling Cavas is the non-vintage Brut Reserva Cava. Made from a classic blend (for this area) of Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada planted in limestone and clay soils, the wine spends 24 months on its lees before disgorgement. It is an excellent value for consumers looking for alternatives to French Champagne. Lemon/lime, crushed rock and white currant notes are present in this crisp, elegant, refreshing, zesty, dry sparkler. Hints of wheat thins and brioche add complexity." —Robert Parker

More about Bohigas

One of the best sources of inexpensive sparklers – and one of the earliest regions to adopt Champagne methods – is Catalonia, where world-famous Cava is produced.

Cava, like a few other wine categories that we talk about, is one of those “brands” that has been diminished by the oceans of industrially-produced versions that dominate supermarket shelves. What this hasn’t diminished is the very high quality of the best producers.

And Bohigas is one of the best. They’ve been at it for a very long time, growing grapes since 1290! They work organically and are even certified, although they do not put that on their label. They work only with Catalonia’s indigenous grape varieties: Trepat, Macabeo, Parellada, and the magnificent Xarello, which dominates their sparkling wines. Their vineyards are at higher altitude than most Cava producers, ensuring temperatures more akin to Champagne, and therefore more freshness and acidity in the wines.

The mineral cut from the Xarello grape is penetrating and brings to mind Chenin Blanc. The racy saltiness of the terroir echoes Chablis. The bubbles are fine like in Champagne (the Champagne method being employed here, of course). Take these parts together, and you get something distinctly Catalan: great Cava.
