Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition Rouge 2023

$6499

Bosquet des Papes is about as old-school as Chateauneuf-du-Pape gets. Handed down from father to son since the 1850s, now in the fifth generation, the domaine raises its wines in big wooden foudres rather than the glossy small barrels that took over the region. They aren't chasing flash; they're making Chateauneuf to keep and improve in the cellar over a decade or more. The Tradition Rouge is the heart of the house, a Grenache-driven red built on warmth, spice, and herbs. This is how Chateauneuf is supposed to taste.

Antonio Galloni

"Bottled in March 2025, the sexy 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Tradition mixes 75% Grenache with 11% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, the remainder equally divided between Cinsault, Vaccarèse and Counoise. Strawberry jam, stemmy gradations and dried herbs soar from the glass, leading into a full-bodied, seamlessly structured red Châteauneuf that checks out with notable persistence on the spicy finish."

"Vinified in concrete tanks and partially destemmed, the 2023 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Tradition opens with aromas of spices, smoke and dark wild berries. Medium- to full-bodied, enveloping and concentrated, it is ample and well-balanced, built around a dense, gently grippy core of fruit and concluding with a penetrating, persistent finish. Matured for 12 months in a mix of foudres, large barrels and concrete tanks, this blend of 75% Grenache Noir, 11% Syrah, 11% Mourvèdre and small proportions of Cinsault, Vaccarèse and Counoise (1% each) is more introverted at this stage than its 2022 counterpart."

"Deeply coloured and quite dark in character, with damson and liquorice notes. It’s generous, full-bodied, quite spicy and fairly potent, with lovely bright, sappy acidity and very fine, soft tannins. There are some similarities with 2022 and 2020, though it’s not as punchy as 2022 nor quite as energetic as 2020. This should be very good, and will drink before both of these recent vintages. All destemmed, aged in old foudres. The estate had a good yield this year, at 25hl/ha."

More about Bosquet des Papes

Domaine Bosquet des Papes is a decidedly old-school producer of Châteaneuf-du-Pape. It’s been handed down from father to son since the 1850s, and we are now on the fifth generation. They use only large wooden vessels – mostly foudres (large casks), though some demi-muids (i.e., about double the size of a barrique) have also been introduced. They're not making wines to be flashy or win high scores, but to keep in the cellar and improve over the course of a decade or more.
