Brendan Stater-West Saumur Blanc Breze 2023

Brézé is the hilltop tuffeau-and-clay cru that Clos Rougeard made mythic and that Romain Guiberteau has spent the last two decades resurrecting. Brendan Stater-West, the American who landed in Saumur to work at Guiberteau and stayed to start his own domaine, now farms a parcel of old Chenin there himself, courtesy of his mentor. This is the Brézé bottling: 100% Chenin from limestone slopes, organically farmed, fermented with indigenous yeast, aged at length on lees in barrel. Tense, saline, deep, and built to age, it is one of the most exciting small-production Saumur whites being made today. Imported by Becky Wasserman.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

More about Brendan Stater-West

A little over a decade ago, young expat Brendan Stater-West, then working as a waiter in Paris, had an "aha!" moment drinking a bottle of cult-producer Romain Guiberteau's top white, Brézé. Soon after, he talked his way into a job at that venerable Saumur address, where he still works as Guiberteau's assistant winemaker.

Stater-West has been making his own wines in recent years, though, and they're seriously good in their own right. Stylistically, they're somewhat less oaky and tannic that those he makes at Guiberteau, and a bit more delicate and saline.

This budding domaine has access to some truly exceptional terroirs. Astute Loire lovers will recognize the names Ripaille and Brézè – two of Saumur's very best sites for Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, respectively
