Brezza Barolo Cannubi 2016

$9499

Cannubi is one of Barolo's most storied crus, and Brezza farms a piece of it. This historic family estate in the town of Barolo is a hidden gem that turns out classically built, traditionally made Nebbiolo from some of the region's best terroirs. Cannubi sits on a famous ridge where two soil types meet, and the wine shows that balance: perfume and finesse alongside structure. The 2016 vintage was one of Piedmont's greats, a cool, even season that gave wines of poise and longevity. Built to age, but already a beauty.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Barolo Cannubi marries the sweet perfume of this highly regarded site with a good bit of tannic clout. Like all of these 2016s, the Cannubi is a bit rough around the edges today, perhaps because of its relatively recent bottling, about three months before this tasting. I would prefer to drink it over the medium term, as the tannins are likely to outlast the fruit. This is an especially hard, forbidding Cannubi." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The Giacomo Brezza e Figli 2016 Barolo Cannubi shows a bright point of candied cherry and blood orange that rises above spice, smoke and tar. This wine delivers a classic playlist of Barolo aromas, and it has that light touch that underlines the elegance and the understated qualities of Nebbiolo. Like the other wines in this portfolio, this Barolo from Brezza shows some thinness that suggests a medium-term drinking window. This release comprises exactly 8,793 750-milliliter bottles and 396 magnums." —Monica Larner

Kerin O'Keefe

"Aromas of rose petal, perfumed berry and menthol are front and center on this elegant, fragrant red. Loaded with finesse, the focused, full-bodied palate combines grace and structure, delivering succulent red cherry, raspberry compote, white pepper and star anise alongside bright acidity and youthfully taut, refined tannins. It’s radiant. Drink 2024–2036." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Brezza

While we are fortunate that the fashion for big & bold, flashy & opulent has seen its day in Barolo, that doesn't mean that every traditionally made Barolo manages to achieve the harmony and elegance that we seek—but Brezza delivers.

The wines from this address have always been good, but they've become truly fine in recent years. Enzo is the driving force behind the huge step up in quality that this old estate has taken in the past decade or so, as well as their conversion to organic viticulture. He makes unfailingly honest and delicate wines of purpose.

Brezza's wines are all from hand-harvested estate fruit and are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The Baroli are aged in 3,000L untoasted Slavonian oak botti. None of the wines are fined or filtered. The results are classic beauties of red fruit and charm.
