Brezza Barolo Sarmassa 2019

$9499

Sarmassa is one of Barolo's powerhouse crus, and 2019 brings Brezza's muscular take into its current release. This historic family estate in the town of Barolo farms traditionally and lets the site speak: Sarmassa's sun-exposed, structured terroir yields a dense, grippy Nebbiolo. The 2019 vintage was warm but balanced, giving generous, ripe wines with the tannic backbone Barolo demands. Decant it now or, better, tuck it away for several years. A serious cru Barolo from a quietly excellent producer.

"The 2019 Barolo Sarmassa is another impressive wine in this range from Brezza. A rich, virile Barolo, the Sarmassa packs a serious punch. Black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice, mocha, sage and underbrush flesh out in the glass. The 2019 is wonderfully deep and expansive, with tremendous palate presence and tons of character. What a wine!" —Antonio Galloni

"Aged in botti for two years, the Brezza 2019 Barolo Sarmassa was initially closed when I tasted it and took a little extra time to find focus. It offers medium-plus intensity and nice definition. However, it does evolve nicely in the glass, going from primary fruit to savory spice and tobacco. These results are quite elegant, and you will especially appreciate the finesse of the mouthfeel. Production is 5,982 bottles plus 283 magnums." —Monica Larner

"Brezza is dedicated to organic viticulture, and works only with indigenous yeast, big oak vessels and long macerations in the cellar. His 2019 Sarmassa is one of the most elegant Barolos of the vintage, if not the most. Bright ruby in the glass and vibrant on the nose, the tannins are impeccable. Plenty of Parma violet notes are to the fore, soaked with rhubarb root, liquorice stick and a whiff of yellow fruits. The attack is poised, soft and silky, with long, lifted acidity. There is a perfect extraction here – the tannins are very well judged and ripe." —Aldo Fiordelli

"Brezza’s 2019 Sarmassa is full-bodied and compelling, starting with its balsamic aromas of camphor that mingle with ripe black-skinned berry, tobacco, graphite and spice. On the concentrated yet almost weightless palate, firm, tightly woven tannins seamlessly support dried cherry, blood orange, licorice, menthol and the same tobacco note as the nose. Combining power and restraint, it’s still youthfully austere and needs time. Drink 2029–2049." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Brezza

While we are fortunate that the fashion for big & bold, flashy & opulent has seen its day in Barolo, that doesn't mean that every traditionally made Barolo manages to achieve the harmony and elegance that we seek—but Brezza delivers.

The wines from this address have always been good, but they've become truly fine in recent years. Enzo is the driving force behind the huge step up in quality that this old estate has taken in the past decade or so, as well as their conversion to organic viticulture. He makes unfailingly honest and delicate wines of purpose.

Brezza's wines are all from hand-harvested estate fruit and are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The Baroli are aged in 3,000L untoasted Slavonian oak botti. None of the wines are fined or filtered. The results are classic beauties of red fruit and charm.
