Carl Loewen Thornicher Ritsch Riesling Auslese 2024

$4899

Carl Loewen farms some of the Mosel's steepest, most thrilling slopes, and the Thornicher Ritsch is a grand site that critics keep calling underrated. This Auslese is the sweet, opulent end of the lineup, picked late from a near-vertical vineyard where old vines dig into grey Devonian slate and quartzite. Expect a wine that balances honeyed ripeness against the racy, mouthwatering acidity that makes Mosel Riesling so addictive. Pour it cold and let it unwind.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2024 Riesling Thörnicher Ritsch Auslese was made with around 40% botrytis-affected fruit that is not shriveled yet. A slight reduction mixes with passion fruit on the nose. The palate is exquisitely pure and full of peachiness. It is rounded and smooth, but on light feet, with beautiful stone fruit pervaded by the smoothest, most lemony freshness. The 2024 is absolutely elegant." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"Rambunctious on the nose, this stunning Riesling features apple jelly, durian and cut chive aromas, with a palate that brings a ton of ripe, high-fidelity flavors of tinned peach, pear, oolong and celery root. Though dense and powerful, this maintains real energy, using lime, grapefruit pith and dill to move through the long, graceful finish. Drink now through 2036."

More about Carl Loewen

The Loewen estate has been around since 1803 and boasts some extremely important grand crus sites with some very, very old vines. Of all the underrated estates in the Mosel, it is perplexing that Loewen has stayed under the radar for so long. The wines are pure magic – viscerally expressing the terroir of truly great crus, nurtured by attentive, sustainable vineyard care beyond most growers in the Mosel.
