Fonroque was the first Grand Cru Classé ever certified biodynamic, and the 2020 shows that farming at its best: a generous, ripe Saint-Émilion that still finishes taut and precise. Alain Moueix decided to go biodynamic in 2002, which was a real break with Bordeaux convention back then. The Guillard family, who own the estate now, are just as committed to biodynamics, and Moueix stayed on as consultant for this vintage. The 2020 growing season threw everything at the vines. A nearly tropical spring brought heavy mildew pressure, then irregular flowering and drought cut the crop to 40 hectolitres per hectare. The grapes came in early, between 7 and 21 September, fully ripe. The blend is 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc from the limestone plateau just north-west of the village and a hillside of limestone and clay. Only 30% of the barrels were new, so the oak supports the fruit rather than covering it up. This is classified-growth Right Bank made with real conviction, and it's honest about its vintage.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Tasting Profile

Dark purple. The nose is pure, with notes of coffee and something floral. On the palate the fruit is juicy and crisp, and the wine feels generous without being heavy. Tannins are smooth, and the finish is tense and precise.
