Chateau Pavie Macquin Bordeaux Blend 1995

This is Pavie Macquin at the very start of its modern era: 1995 was the first harvest after Nicolas Thienpont took over as manager at the end of 1994. He worked alongside Stéphane Derenoncourt, who had been at the estate since 1990. That team would go on to take the château to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 2006, so this bottle comes from more than a decade before the promotion. The vineyard sits on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, with heavy clays over "calcaire à astéries" (limestone full of fossilised starfish). Merlot leads on the clays, which the house credits with the wine's power and flesh. Cabernet Franc goes where the rock breaks the surface, and the producer says it gives the blend its backbone. The name honours Albert Macquin, who saved the vineyard after phylloxera by bringing grafted vines to Saint-Émilion, and his descendants, the Corre-Macquin family, still own it. Thirty years on, this is a mature Right Bank bottle that shows where today's Pavie Macquin began.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic; duck confit with Puy lentils; wild mushroom risotto; beef tenderloin with a red wine and shallot sauce; aged Comté or Mimolette.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Saint-Émilion limestone-plateau profile: Merlot-led dark plum and black cherry, with Cabernet Franc adding graphite, tobacco leaf and a fresh, firm backbone. Typically full and fleshy yet mineral, with tannins that soften with bottle age, bringing earthy, leathery, truffle-tinged notes and a long, savoury, dry finish.
