Chateau Quintus Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2012

$13999

Quintus is the right-bank project of Domaine Clarence Dillon, owners of First Growth Château Haut-Brion. They assembled the estate in stages on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, and 2012 is one of the very first vintages produced fully under their hand. Merlot-led with a smaller share of Cabernet Franc, raised in a careful percentage of new oak, it is firm, mineral and structured rather than the showy, cushiony style some Saint-Émilions chase. A serious wine with a serious pedigree, and a fascinating glimpse at the early Dillon-era house style.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2012 Quintus has a rich and fleshy bouquet with upfront, expressive red fruit with vanilla and liquorice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with lower acidity than its peers, just a tad smudged on the finish but with greater persistence than either Péby-Faugères and Canon-la-Gaffelière. Tasted twice with consistent notes, the second perhaps just a little drier than the first. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting." —Neal Martin

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Briar, black currant and licorice root notes form the core, with good energy to the briary grip. A tobacco lining runs through the finish. Shows good length and cut overall."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"The second release since the owners of Château Haut-Brion took over the property, this is very tannic and certainly extracted with its dark chocolate flavors. It's textured, dominated by Merlot and richly lush under the tough exterior. Drink from 2020" —Roger Voss
