Clos des Fous Mr Chile 2023

Old bush vines, granite and native yeast: this is the Chilean red to hand anyone who still thinks the country only makes big, polished, industrial wine. Clos des Fous was founded in 2008 by four friends, among them terroir specialist Pedro Parra, who also consults for Jean-Marc Roulot. They were tired of hearing Chilean wine called boring, green and overripe, so they went looking for the country's overlooked, extreme sites. Mr. Chile is 75% Cinsault and 25% País from several tiny Itata vineyards of about three acres each, where head-trained vines planted around 1965 grow on granite at roughly 620 feet. Winemaker Felipe Cartes fermented the 2023 with native yeasts and 20% whole clusters, then aged it in stainless steel on its lees for a year, so there's no oak sitting between you and those old vines. A bit of trivia: the wine started out as a collaboration between the winery, its importer Brazos, and Bacchanal in New Orleans. There were only 700 cases of the 2023, and at 13.5% alcohol it's easy to drink while still having plenty to say.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Empanadas de pino, pastel de choclo, grilled chorizo or merguez, roast chicken with mint and herbs, New Orleans red beans and rice, mushroom and lentil stew.

Tasting Profile

Expect the bright, juicy side of old-vine Itata Cinsault: red cherry, raspberry and a touch of dried flowers, with a peppery, earthy edge from granite soils and some whole-cluster fermentation. With no oak and a light to medium body, it typically shows fresh acidity, soft, fine tannins and a clean, savoury finish. Think of a slightly wilder, more rustic Beaujolais.
