Clos du Tue-Boeuf VdF Romorantin Frileuse 2024

$4399

Romorantin is one of the Loire's last survivors — a variety down to a few hectares worldwide and permitted nowhere outside Cour-Cheverny — and Thierry Puzelat is among the handful of growers keeping it going, having planted rows of it in his Frileuse vineyard. The 2024 draws on three generations of vines at once: roughly 15% from vines around 115 years old, 35% from fifty-year-old ungrafted franc de pied plantings, and half from a parcel the domaine put in the ground in 2018, all on clay and flint. It spends twelve months in Burgundy barrels and goes into bottle with barely any sulfur, around 15 mg/l, so give it a generous decant and plenty of air. Clos du Tue-Boeuf has farmed organically with native yeasts since the 1990s and is one of the founding names of natural Loire wine. Tense and stony, this belongs at the table rather than before the meal.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken, pork loin with mustard, grilled trout, aged Comte, or a mushroom and leek tart.

Tasting Profile

Stone fruit, almond and anise over a stony, saline core. Dry and medium-bodied, with firm acidity, a slightly waxy texture and a long savory finish. Better with air.
