If you want to understand Costers del Priorat in one bottle, this is the one: the estate's flagship. The name comes from "pizarra," Spanish for slate. That's a nod to the red llicorella (decomposed slate over limestone) that defines Priorat, the steep, rugged appellation in Catalonia. Winemaker Jose Mas Barberà pairs fruit from the cool centre of the region with fruit from the warmer south. Most of it comes from the estate's two largest vineyards, Mas Alsera in Torroja and Sant Martí in Bellmunt: organically farmed bush vines on terraces between 200 and 750 metres, all picked by hand. The 2023 leans on Garnacha (80%, with 20% Samsó, the local name for Carignan). It ferments on native yeasts in steel, then spends a year spread across barrels, large foudres and concrete, so no single vessel takes over. The house goal is strength through freshness and elegance, and the handling is minimal: no cold stabilisation, no clarification, only a light filtration and very little sulfur. For a region better known for pricey trophy bottles, this is a serious and honest way in.

"The 2023 Pissarres from Priorat is composed of 60% Garnatxa Negra and 40% Cariñena. From a warm, dry year, it shows ripeness with field herbs, chutney, cypress and black fruit. Energetic and juicy, it carries an alcoholic lift balanced by freshness. A herbal note lingers on the finish, marking the vintage." —Joaquín Hidalgo

Grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic; Catalan botifarra sausage with white beans; grilled vegetables with romesco; slow-roasted pork shoulder with thyme and olives.

Tasting Profile

Expect the Priorat signature in a fresher register: ripe red and black cherry, plum and liquorice, with wild Mediterranean herbs and the stony, graphite edge the slate soils are known for. Typically medium- to full-bodied, with lively acidity and fine, firm tannins, the oak kept in the background, finishing long and savoury. Think a more mineral, focused Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
