Costers del Priorat Rocafosca 2022

This is Priorat's dark slate in a bottle, without the heavy oak and over-extraction the region used to trade on. Rocafosca ("dark rock") is Costers del Priorat's top barrel selection, and the estate calls it its most representative wine. The 2022 is half old-vine Carignan, half Garnacha, from bush vines planted between 1939 and 1970 on Devonian slate. They sit at 350 to 500 meters, mostly on north- and northeast-facing slopes, which are the cooler side of the hill in a sunbaked place like Priorat. The fruit links the estate's two big properties, Mas Alsera in Torroja at the region's rural heart and Sant Martí in Bellmunt in the warmer south, with a few other parcels added in. Winemaker Jose Mas Barberà takes his inspiration from Piedmont Nebbiolo rather than from the blueberry-and-oak Priorat of the past. His rule is "If you don't want to eat it, don't put it in the tank," and here the grapes are sorted berry by berry. He ferments each variety separately on native yeast in steel and cement, then ages the wine for a year in old 3,000-liter Slavonian oak vats and clay amphorae. The result is brooding and mineral, not jammy: a serious Priorat for anyone who has been put off by the region's heavyweights. The vineyards are farmed organically, and the wine is vegan.

"The 2022 Rocafosca from Priorat is composed of 50% of each variety. Complex on the nose, it reveals morello cherry, plum and Mediterranean herbs with balsamic tones. Dry, silky and intense, with fine reactive tannins characteristic of a warm year, it remains balanced thanks to fruit and a compact finish. Polished and harmonious." —Joaquín Hidalgo

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb chops with rosemary; Iberian pork secreto or presa off the grill; braised veal cheeks; mushroom cannelloni in béchamel; Basque tuna stew (marmitako); wild mushroom risotto.

Tasting Profile

Expect the darker, more mineral side of Priorat: black cherry, blackberry and dried herbs over a smoky, slate-like stoniness, with old-vine Carignan bringing lively acidity. Large old casks and amphorae typically keep oak in the background, so the medium-to-full body stays fresh, with firm, fine tannins. Think savoury and structured rather than jammy, finishing long and dry.
