CVNE Cune Rioja Crianza Tinto 2022

$1699

This is the wine that started it all: CVNE has made its Cune Crianza every single year since the house was founded in Haro in 1879. (The 'Cune' name, by the way, is a printer's happy accident—a misread of the initials C.V.N.E.) Tempranillo leads, rounded out with Garnacha and Mazuelo, aged a year in American oak in the classic Rioja style. It's medium-bodied, fresh, and fruit-forward, with just enough oak-driven vanilla and spice to feel traditional. The quintessential everyday Rioja, and a benchmark at the price.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"A classic Rioja blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha and 5% Mazuelo, the 2022 Crianza opens with a gentle touch of oak over bright red fruit, cherry and subtle forest floor tones, firmly in a traditional register. Dry and agile, it has lightly reactive tannins that provide grip without excess and deliver solid flavor definition. Notably well-made for its scale of production, this 2022 Crianza shows the composure expected of a Rioja of this type." —Joaquín Hidalgo

Robert Parker

90 points

"The 2022 Cune Crianza is a blend of 85% Tempranillo with 15% Garnacha and Mazuelo from Rioja Alta. Looking for the Haro style, it fermented in 20,000-liter stainless steel vats with selected yeasts and matured in well-seasoned, used American oak and a small portion of French oak barrels for 12 months. Like in many places across Spain, the results in 2022 are much better than expected. This is soft and tender, polished and approachable, without the tension of a cooler year but very pleasant and easy to drink. They have been looking for finer and more elegant wines, finer-boned. It was bottled with 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.63 and 5.45 grams of acidity. They produced three million bottles. It was bottled in December 2025." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about CVNE

CVNE – that’s “Compañia Vinicola del Norte de Espańa”, but nobody calls it that, is one of the original seven producers to invent the Rioja wine at the end of the 19th century, when they all set up their bodegas in Haro for easy access to the train. The others include legends like Lopez de Heredia, La Rioja Alta, and Muga. All of these producers, once pioneers, are now conservators of a very special heritage: the production of wine from the Tempranillo grape, grown in calcareous/clay soils, and aging it in vessels produced from (mostly) American oak casks.
